Dark skin spots, also called age spots because they usually show up in your middle years or later, are caused by sun exposure, medications you take or your own hormones, according to a 2007 report published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Removal of the spots may require complex investigation of causes you can not reverse, cosmetic cover-ups or expensive surgery. But you can remove those spots with a time-tested, simple, safe and effective remedy you can apply in your own home with supplies from your kitchen and bathroom.
Application
Step 1
Juice and strain your favorite citrus fruit, whether an orange, a lemon or a lime.
Step 2
Mix the citrus juice with twice the volume of apple cider vinegar.
Step 3
Dab the juice and vinegar mixture onto your brown spots with a cotton ball.
Step 4
Tape the cotton ball over the moistened spot and leave it in place for 15 minutes.
Step 5
Remove the tape and cotton ball. Rinse the area with water and apply a moisturizing lotion.
Step 6
Repeat your application and rinsing procedure every morning and evening for two weeks or until you see the degree of lightening you want.
Step 7
Repeat this procedure for dark skin spots on you hands and arms, as needed.
Tips and Warnings
- This process can be mildly irritating for some people with sensitive skin. Try it first on a small, less visible spot to see if your skin reacts with a temporary reddening which may require a bit of cosmetic care during treatment.
- Not all skin spots are harmless, darkened patches. Because long-term sun exposure can be one of the causes, skin cancer can underlie some of your spots. Do not attempt home remedies until you show your doctor the spots you want removed. A mistake can be dangerous.
