Restasis is the brand name for the generic drug cyclosporine ophthalmic. This medication is part of a class of drugs called immunomodulators and is indicated to alleviate dry eye symptoms in affected patients. Restasis works by controlling eye inflammation, which helps aid in natural tear production. Cyclosporine ophthalmic is administered as liquid eye drops to the affected eye twice daily, or as directed by a doctor. Patients should be aware of the contraindications for Restasis before beginning treatment with this medication.

Under Age 16

The safety and effectiveness of Restasis has not been evaluated in patients under the age of 16, warn health professionals with the Food and Drug Administration. Consequently, pediatric patients should avoid using Restasis unless otherwise instructed by a physician.

Current Eye Infection

Patients who currently have an active eye infection should not use Restasis within the affected eye, according to medical experts with DailyMed. Use of this medication within an infected eye may exacerbate the infection.

Hypersensitive to Ingredients

This dry eye treatment should not be used by patients who are hypersensitive to cyclosporine, the active ingredient in Restasis, report RxList medical professionals. Additionally, patients who are hypersensitive to any of the inactive ingredients in this medication, such as glycerin or castor oil, should not use Restasis. Hypersensitive patients who use this medication can develop a severe allergic reaction following treatment.

Uses Contacts

Patients should not apply Restasis to the eye while wearing contacts, warn health professionals with Drugs.com. Contacts should be removed prior to administering Restasis and reinserted approximately 15 minutes afterward, unless otherwise directed by a doctor.
