Aftershave allergies can occur anywhere on the body where the aftershave has been applied. This type of allergy, called contact dermatitis, results from the body having an abnormal immune reaction to a compound in the aftershave, often one of the fragrances that the aftershave contains. Contact dermatitis can cause a painful or itchy rash as well as hives.
Step 1
Stop using the aftershave. This may seem obvious, but the easiest way to treat aftershave allergies (or any other form of contact dermatitis) is to avoid the compound that causes the allergic reaction. Try looking for "fragrance-free" aftershaves instead.
Step 2
Apply aloe. Lotions and creams with aloe may help soothe the rash and help with the itching or burning.
Step 3
Apply a wet dressing. Wet dressings can be prepared by soaking a cloth in a mixture of half a cup of white vinegar, one pint of water and a packet of Burrow's solution (available at many drugstores); and then wring it out. Let the wet dressing sit on the affected area for fifteen minutes.
Step 4
Take oral antihistamines or cortisone tablets. Antihistamine tablets can help block the immune system's ability to generate an allergic reaction. Cortisone tablets will help suppress the immune system, though they are not advised for long-term use.
Step 5
Apply hydrocortisone creams to the affected area. These creams, which can be purchased either over-the-counter or with a prescription, will help reduce the inflammation and the rash that an aftershave allergy can cause.
