Tattoos are a type of body art in which ink is injected into the skin to form a design. While tattoos are, for all intents and purposes, permanent, there are several methods that can be used to remove or fade their appearance. However, these procedures can often have side effects, such as scarring or blistering.

Understanding Tattoos

Tattoos are created by an electrically powered machine. This machine contains a needle that moves rapidly up and down to puncture the skin. When the needle punctures the skin, it leaves a drop of ink approximately 1 mm deep. Left alone, that ink will remain in the skin permanently.

Laser Removal

Laser removal is the most popular form of tattoo removal. During the procedure, the ink in the skin absorbs light from the laser. The light then causes the pigment to break up, and eventually the body will naturally filter out the pigment. With several treatments, laser therapy is usually an effective manner of removing a tattoo.

Dermabrasion

The first step during dermabrasion is to freeze the area of the skin until it is numb. Once numb, the skin is sanded with an abrasive rotary instrument. This causes the top layers of skin to peel and removes the surface and middle layers of the tattoo. Dermabrasion is not always effective in removing the entire tattoo, but can help fade the appearance of it.

Excision

Tattooed skin can also be surgically removed under the right condition. Since it involves completely removing the tattooed area, excision is an effective method. However, it can usually only be done on small tattoos. On large tattoos, multiple treatments are needed and a skin graft from another part of the body may be taken.

Blistering

Some of these procedures, while generally considered low-risk, may leave you with side effects. A common symptom is blistering, along with scarring, swelling and bleeding. If you notice any of these conditions, apply an antibacterial ointment to the area to promote proper healing. You may also need to place bandages over the area. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions for taking care of your body. Properly taking care of your skin is vital for the healing process and effective results.

Results

Results from tattoo removal vary depending on the method. Laser removal and excision are the most common methods used, and usually the most effective. However, these methods might require several treatments. Recovery time varies on several factors, including the size of the tattoo, method used and the patient's body's healing process.
