About 85 percent of American teens suffer from acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Teens suffering from oily skin or acne will find that plain old oatmeal from the kitchen offers an inexpensive treatment option. Oatmeal, an age-old remedy for soothing irritated or itchy skin, is a common ingredient in commercial skin care products as well as homemade skin care remedies. The cleansing, absorbing and exfoliating properties of oatmeal make it an ideal ingredient for treating skin problems such as acne. Adding honey in the oatmeal mask functions as a skin toner.

Step 1

Boil ¾ cup of water in a small saucepan. Mix in a ½ cup of instant oatmeal. Reduce heat to low and allow the oatmeal to simmer for one minute.

Step 2

Remove the cooked oatmeal from heat. Add ¼ cup of honey and mix well. Allow the mixture to cool.

Step 3

Apply the thickened oatmeal to the face when it is just slightly warm. Smooth it all around in an even layer, taking care to keep it out of your eyes.

Step 4

Leave the oatmeal mask on for about 20 minutes. Wash the mask off with warm water and dry your face with a clean towel.

Things You'll Need

  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Mixing spoon
  • ½ cup quick oatmeal
  • ¼ cup honey
