When it comes to cardio equipment, there are many different makes and models to choose from. Exercise bikes are one of the most popular choices in gyms and for home use. They are safe on the joints as there is no impact, and they are easy to operate. In addition to burning a significant amount of calories, they can also tone various muscles.
Quads
The quadriceps are the large muscles located on the front of your thighs. They are called into play every time you extend your knee. When you are on an exercise bike, this is taking place on the push or downward stroke of your pedaling.
Hamstrings
The hamstring muscles oppose the quads and they are located on the back upper part of the thighs. They are called into play when the knee is flexing. While you are pedaling, this happens as you pull the pedals upward.
Calves
The calf muscles are located on the lower back part of the leg below the knees. There are two parts to the calves called the gastrocnemius and the soleus. These muscles are working every time the ankle is extending or your foot is flattening out, as when you are pushing down on the pedals. The calves would especially be getting worked if you had a lot of resistance on the bike and you were standing up.
Tibialis Anterior
The tibialis anterior muscles run down the front of the shins. They oppose the calf muscles and get worked when your foot is flexing or coming in towards your shin. This would be the case when your foot is coming back around from a down stroke.
Glutes
The glutes, also called the buttocks, are the muscles that you sit on. They are being worked and toned when your leg is extending. This can be seen when you are pushing down on the pedals.
Hip Flexors
The hip flexors are in the front lower abdominal area. They are being toned when the legs are coming back towards the body. The abs are also utilized to stabilize the body and to aid in the drive strength of the legs.
