According to Texas Health and Human Services, proton pump inhibitors are drugs used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis due to gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The doctor may prescribe other proton pump inhibitors instead of using Zegerid.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Aciphex, also known as raberprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses production of stomach acid. Aciphex is used to treat and prevent gastroesophageal reflux disease, erosive esophagitis, stomach and duodenal ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Common side effects of Aciphex include headache, upset stomach, gas, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
Prevacid
The National Institutes of Health states that Prevacid, also known as lansoprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces production of acid in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Common side effects of Prevacid include stomach pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Kapidex
According to Drugs.com, Kapidex or dexlansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to decrease stomach acid production. Kapidex is prescribed to treat and prevent frequent heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Kapidex may also be used to treat peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which the stomach produces too much stomach acid. Common side effects of Kapidex are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gas and diarrhea, stuffy nose and sneezing.
