Home Remedies for a Migraine Headache

Migraine headaches cause severe pain, usually on one side of the head. Symptoms include a pounding sensation, nausea and irritability. Migraines have many causes, including liver and digestion disorders as well as increased anxiety. Home remedies to treat migraines may work for some. Treatment is very individualized, and what may work for one person may not work for another.

Massage

Use essential oils to relieve headache tension. Apply several drops of pure lavender, peppermint or sandalwood oils to temples. Massage into skin. Rub onto other areas of the body such as arms, hands and legs. Mix the essential oil with one to two tablespoons of almond oil to for an all-over body massage.

Hot Compress

Place a clean washcloth in a bowl of hot water. Add several drops of essential oils. Squeeze out the excess water. Place the washcloth on your forehead. Repeat process as needed.

Practice Light Exercise

Light exercises such as walking or stretching can increase blood flow and circulation, which can help when you are experiencing a migraine headache. Slowly begin exercising to give the body time to adjust. Do not exercise vigorously, as this may make a migraine worse.

Cabbage Compress

Peel several fresh leaves from a cabbage. Cut into large segments and place on your forehead. When the leaves wilt, remove and replace with new leaves.

Fresh Grape Puree

Place one cup green or red grapes in a blender. Mix until a light puree is formed. Drink or eat the mixture with a spoon.
