There comes a time in every golf round where the driver inevitably has to come out of the bag. On long-distance holes, you will have to use your driver. When that time comes, you want to be able to get a long and high shot. You don't want to roll the ball across the fairway with a worm-burner. To gain the most amount of distance and a boost in your ego, you must get the ball in the air off the tee. There are certain steps you can do before and during your swing to help achieve this.
Step 1
Place an extra-long tee in the ground for your driver. According to Free Golf Lessons, the tee is high enough when half of the golf ball is raised above the top of the driver.
Step 2
Move the ball forward in your stance. For right-handed golfers, the golf ball should be closer to your left foot. According to Golf Link, play the ball one or two ball lengths closer to your front foot. This will allow you to see the ball longer during your downswing which helps making contact squarely.
Step 3
Hold the driver with a firm grip. According to Golf Link, to control your club, you must grip it firmly. Don't let the club fall loose in your hands or you will have a weak grip. A weak grip will result in a poorly hit drive.
Step 4
Hit the ball on the upswing. According to Free Golf Lessons, make sure you are coming up on your swing when you make contact with the ball. Teeing higher up encourages a proper sweeping motion which will promote more lift.
Tips and Warnings
- Set up to hit the center of the ball or the sweet spot. Many golfers line up the center of the club face with the ball and end up hitting it on the heel side after coming back down on your swing. According to Just For Golf, stretch out your arms and align your club so the toe of the club face is lined up with the center of the ball. This should help in hitting the sweet spot of the ball on your downswing.
- Do not try to kill the ball with your driver. Swinging harder will only cause problems. According to Golf Link, it may be tempting to add more velocity to your swing with the driver, particularly if you want to impress the group you are with. However, by doing so, you will have a negative impact on your timing, reduce accuracy, and will not help in distance.
