Teens smoke for a number of reasons, sometimes in an attempt to fit in with their peers. According to KidsHealth, at least 3,900 kids start smoking on a regular basis each day. Smoking presents many serious health risks, including cancer, emphysema, bronchitis and heart problems. The addictive nature of nicotine makes it challenging to stop once smoking becomes a habit. Preventing teens from smoking cigarettes in the first place reduces the risk of health problems.
Step 1
Discuss the dangers of smoking with teens. Talk about the long-term health risks, such as heart disease and cancer. Be sure to emphasize the short-term physical side effects, such as cigarette odor, bad breath and stained teeth, along with the cost and difficulty of quitting.
Step 2
Remind your teen about people you know who have smoking-related problems. Mention the physical and health symptoms they endure because of smoking.
Step 3
Take an active role in your teen's life. By being involved, you let your child know how important she is to you. Have frequent discussions with your teen about smoking. One discussion about the risks of smoking isn't enough to prevent her from trying cigarettes.
Step 4
Build your teen's self-esteem through positive interactions. Focus on your child's achievements rather than constantly pointing out his mistakes. If your child has strong self-esteem, he may be able to resist peer pressure, particularly when faced with pressure to smoke.
Step 5
Role-play to give teens a chance to practice handling peer pressure. Simulate a situation in which your teen is being pressured into smoking. Help your teen practice saying no.
Step 6
Support your teen's involvement in sports, music, drama and other organized activities. These activities help build her self-esteem and may help her avoid smoking.
Step 7
Meet your teen's friends. Encourage friendships with peers who make a positive impact on your teen, particularly those who do not smoke.
Step 8
Be a good role model. If you are a smoker, consider quitting since you are a strong influence on your child's life. Let your kids see how difficult it is to quit so they realize the impact of smoking.
