Acid indigestion is a condition that occurs when there is an overabundance of acid in the stomach. Pain can be felt in the upper abdominal and chest area and there can be a reflux of acid that backs up into the throat. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a more severe form of acid indigestion and they can both be cured and treated by taking a natural approach.
Avoidance
There are various foods and beverages that can trigger acid indigestion and they should be avoided. Examples of these include spicy foods, foods that are greasy and high in fat, chocolate, caffeinated beverages, garlic, mint and alcohol. Also avoid smoking as it impairs the function of the lower part of the esophagus.
Meals
When you eat a big meal, acid is used in your stomach to break down the food. This can flare up acid indigestion. To stop this from happening, eat smaller portions of food and eat several times a day. Also do not eat right before going to bed.
Elevation
When you lie down for long periods of time, such as when you are sleeping, the acid in your body has a greater chance of coming up into your throat. To avoid this from happening, elevate your bed by placing some cement or wood blocks under the feet on the head side of the bed. Your bed should be elevated about 6 to 9 inches off the floor.
Weight Maintenance
According to the Mayo Clinic, excess weight exacerbates acid indigestion as the weight pushes the stomach up and causes it to enter the esophagus. Keep your weight under control by exercising and following a healthy diet. If you are obese or overweight, aim for a one to pound per week weight loss goal.
ACV
Apple cider vinegar is a home remedy that is used for many purposes. To use it for acid indigestion, add 2 tsps. to a glass of water and drink it up to three times a day before meals.
Herbs
There are several herbal formulas that can be used to treat acid indigestion. Examples of these are chamomile, marshmallow, slippery elm and licorice.
Stress Relief
Reducing your stress levels can also help to control your acid indigestion. Participate in some relaxation activities like yoga, tai-chi, guided imagery and meditative breathing.
