When you have a cold or experience sinus pressure, you may be quick to reach for the over-the-counter medicines, but Ayurvedic treatments may be able to do the job without putting unnecessary drugs in your system. A saline flush through the use of a neti pot is a popular alternative solution to clearing the sinuses.
About Ayurveda
From the Sanskrit words "ayur," or life, and "veda," or science, Ayuveda is one of the world's oldest medical systems. Originally from India, Ayurveda integrates the body, mind and spirit through the use of herbs, massage and specialized diets. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, this holistic approach focuses on cleansing the body of impurities in order to restore balance. By doing this, you increase your resilience and resistance to disease, reduce stress and create harmony in your life.
The Neti Pot
According to Robert Svoboda, Ayurvedic physician and author, a neti pot is one of the tools used in Ayurveda as a part of basic daily hygiene. It is a teapot-shaped container that flushes a saline solution through the nose. The pots come in many designs and are made from a variety of materials. Svoboda recommends using one that will not break or react with saltwater. While many first time users are repulsed by the process, most say the relief outweighs the revulsion.
Directions for Use
A saltwater solution should be prepared by mixing a heaping teaspoon of sea salt with a half-liter of warm, purified water. The salt helps flush out the fluid in the sinuses rather than simply absorb the water. After the neti pot is filled with the solution, put the spout into your left nostril and tilt your head to the right. Tip the pot slightly to get the water to flow in. Be sure to lean over the sink and breath through your mouth. The water should flow into the left nostril, inside the nose and sinuses and out the right nostril. After doing this for 15 to 30 seconds, switch sides.
Benefits
Although anyone can benefit from this Ayurvedic sinus treatment, those suffering from chronic respiratory congestion, frequent colds, and sinus headaches find much relief with the neti pot. This practice is also good for those feeling under the weather. When you have a cold or flu, it may be a habit to take over-the-counter medicine that sometimes contain up to five drugs when you only need one or two. The neti pot is a natural way to clear out your stuffy nose without putting unnecessary drugs in your body.
Alternative Treatments
According to the Yoga Journal, chanting "Om" can also help clear your sinuses. The sound vibrations of the mantra may help to ward off infections. Chanting and humming encourage air to move back and fourth between your sinus membranes and nasal passages. This opens the tiny ducts that allow your sinuses to drain properly.
