Hairy legs can put a damper on your big night out. Take advantage of different tried and true remedies to remove the hair from your legs. Use the method that best fits your lifestyle. Depending on the method you use, your skin may stay smooth for days, weeks or months--certain methods remove leg hair permanently. Assess your lifestyle and try different options until you find the one you like best.
Step 1
Use a razor to shave your legs. Shave your legs in the shower for the best results; the warm water will open up your hair follicles and ensure a closer shave. Thoroughly lather your leg with shaving cream to prevent razor burn and ensure a smooth shave. Start at your ankle and run the razor in a straight line up to your knee. Repeat this step until you've removed all the hair from your calf. Rinse the blade off after every swipe of the razor. Focus on trouble spots, such as behind your ankle and knee--it's easy to leave stray hairs in these areas. Shave from your knee up your thigh. Repeat on your other leg. Use this method every few days.
Step 2
Use a depilatory cream to remove unwanted leg hair. Depilatory creams break down the hairs from the roots so they dissolve. This method can last a few days to two weeks. Buy a cream made specifically for legs. Follow the instructions on the package exactly.
Step 3
Wax away your unwanted hair. Visit your local salon or use an at-home waxing kit. Apply hot or cold wax to your leg according to the product's instructions. For example, hot wax usually is applied with a stick and covered with fabric strips that you quickly remove. Waxing can last three to six weeks.
Step 4
Get laser hair removal treatments if you're looking for a long-term solution. This method consists of a board-certified doctor using a hand-held laser instrument to shoot a laser beam into your hair follicles. The heat from the beam damages the hair follicles and prevent them from growing again. While this procedure is permanent for a few women, others must return every six months or so for maintenance.
Step 5
Talk with an electrologist. Electrolysis kills hair follicles--this method usually is a permanent solution. This isn't a quick method. It involves several appointments with an electrologist, who will insert a needle into each individual hair follicle and send an electric current through the hair root.
Step 6
Take medication for hair removal if an underlying medical issue is the cause. Hirsutism is a medical condition that causes excess hair growth in women. It's characterized by the body producing too much androgen hormone. Antiandrogen medications can help. Discuss these options with your doctor if you think you need medication.
