Dehydration is a serious condition caused by the depletion of fluid levels in your body. Serious illness and death can result from dehydration. It is even more serious when it occurs in an infant. Inadequate fluid intake, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and sweating can cause dehydration in your baby. Increase fluid intake if you suspect dehydration and seek medical attention if you feel uneasy.

No Wet Diapers

Wet diapers are a normal part of every baby's day. If he has gone more than six hours without at least one wet diaper, he may have dehydration, according to Baby Center.

Darker Urine

Urine that is darker in color is a sign of dehydration. If her diaper is yellow or even light brown, consider increasing her fluids, suggests It's a Mom's World. A stronger odor will usually accompany the darker colored urine.

Lethargy

As dehydration sets in and becomes more severe, your baby's energy levels will drop. If he is lethargic and has an accompanying risk factor such as diarrhea, fever or vomiting, dehydration may be the culprit. Try to increase fluid intake, and consider an electrolyte replacement drink, which is usually available at your pharmacy.

No Tears

A baby who is dehydrated may not present any tears when she cries. If your baby typically has tears when she cries, and you notice the tears are absent, she could have dehydration, says the Baby Center. Look for other signs of dehydration and increase fluid intake.

Dry Mouth and Lips

If you notice your baby's lips are very dry or beginning to crack, increase fluid intake. She may also try to instinctively increase saliva production by opening and closing her mouth.

Sunken Eyes and Soft Spot

As dehydration reaches a serious level, your baby's eyes may appear sunken and the soft spot on his head will deepen, claims It's a Mom's World. If you reach this stage, take him to an emergency room as soon as possible.
