Baseball and fast-pitch softball pitch speeds average between 25 and 95 miles per hour, according to EFastBall.com. Even the slowest speed in this range underscores the need for protective headgear to prevent serious injuries to the head and brain. Baseball helmets include both batters' and catchers' helmets that must fit properly for effective protection.

Step 1

Measure your head circumference in inches. Wrap a tape measure around your head so that is rests just above your ears, then measure around the widest part of your head and record this measurement.

Step 2

Compare your head measurement to a sizing chart. Manufacturers' specific sizing charts will vary slightly, but most include sizes that range from extra-small to 2XL. As an example, refer to the following sizing chart to get a general idea of baseball helmet sizing: Extra small is between 20 and 20.5 inches; small is between 20.75 and 21.25 inches; medium is between 21.5 and 22 inches; large is between 22.25 and 22.75 inches; extra-large is between 23 and 23.5 inches; 2XL is between 23.75 and 24.25 inches.

Step 3

Choose a baseball helmet that most closely fits your head measurement. When trying on a helmet, the helmet should have a very snug fit. In addition, the lower edge of the inside front pad should rest 1 inch above your eyebrows and the bill of the helmet should be parallel to the ground when your head is in an upright position.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some baseball helmets also feature adjustment options, such as dials or removable padding that can assist you in getting a correct fit.
