Biliary colic or gallbladder disease occurs during a gallstone attack or with other disturbances related to the release of bile. Pain is experienced in the upper right side of the abdomen, right shoulder, chest and back. Certain products found in the home may offer relief, but do not necessarily cure. Because some home remedies have side effects, consulting with a health practitioner is recommended for those who want to use natural treatments.

Cascara Sagrada

A natural cleansing herb helpful in regulating digestion, cascara sagrada stimulates the production of digestive juices, according to the Clayton College of Natural Health. Only the dried bark should be used in remedies to relieve gallbladder attacks and prevent gallstones.

Ginger

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ginger is a useful remedy for the treatment of digestive upsets such as vomiting and nausea. Ginger has been used to reduce inflammation in traditional medicine. The herb is available in a variety of forms including fresh ginger root, extracts, powdered and candied. Ginger tea or other preparations of ginger may be helpful in relieving pain from gallbladder attacks; however, people with gallstones or scheduled for surgery should consult with a health care practitioner before taking ginger. Ginger can thin the blood, so those taking blood thinners or who bleed easily should avoid using this herb.

Homeopathic Cheledonium

The remedy Cheledonium majus is a prominent liver and gallbladder remedy, according to homeopath Dr. William Boericke in his book, "Materia Medica and Repertory." It may be helpful for people experiencing pain from biliary colic that extends to the right shoulder blade and the top of the right shoulder. It relieves bloating and speeds up the digestion. The remedy is useful for those experiencing nausea and vomiting which is made better after they drink very hot water. Additionally, it is helpful for those who find that eating during a gallbladder attack relieves symptoms temporarily. Do not self-treat with this remedy. Consult a professional experienced in using homeopathy.

Homeopathic Carduus Marianus

Another homeopathic remedy helpful for treating biliary colic and related liver problems is Carduus marianus. It may be helpful when there is soreness and pain in the region of the liver, according to Boericke. It relieves retching and vomiting especially if the vomitus is green and acidic with burning. The person needing this remedy may be constipated or have constipation alternating with diarrhea. There may be swelling in the region of the gallbladder. The remedy is especially useful in treating liver and gallbladder disease related to excess alcohol consumption. Homeopathic remedies are available from health food stores and online pharmacies as well as from homeopathic practitioners. A qualified homeopath should be consulted for treatment of biliary colic or other gallbladder disease.
