According to the American Heart Association, blood pressure below 120/80 mmHg is ideal. However, sometimes consistently low blood pressure, or hypotension, can be a sign of an underlying problem.

The Numbers

The Mayo Clinic defines low blood pressure as readings of 90 mmHg systolic pressure or less or 60 mmHg diastolic pressure or less. Systolic pressure reading is the top number and diastolic pressure is the bottom number.

Concerns

Both the American Heart Association and the Mayo Clinic explain that low blood pressure is generally not a cause for concern unless it is accompanied by certain symptoms. If other symptoms are present, this may indicate a medical condition is causing the low blood pressure.

Symptoms

Low blood pressure can have many symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of low blood pressure can include dizziness, fainting, thirst, nausea, fatigue or lack of concentration. If these symptoms are experienced, visiting a doctor will help determine if there is a problem.
