Bladder Stones Pain

Bladder stones are the result of the buildup of certain compounds in the urine, such as cholesterol or calcium oxalate. These hard stones can form in the bladder and cause significant pain and discomfort.

Characteristics

Pain that is caused by bladder stones is often described as a pain in the lower abdomen, the Mayo Clinic explains, though in men the pain may also localize to the penis. Patients may also complain of pain while urinating.

Causes

Bladder stones usually don't cause pain until they get caught in the neck of the bladder, which is where urine is expelled, NetDoctor explains. This can cause significant irritation and damage to the bladder wall, which can make it hard for urine to leave the bladder.

Treatment

Although pain relievers can help reduce the symptoms of bladder stones, patients will continue to experience pain until the stones are eliminated. This can be done by drinking large amounts of water and taking medications that dissolve the stones. The bladder stones may also be broken down using ultrasonic waves or be surgically removed, according to Medline Plus.
