You should replace bicycle handlebar grips when they become worn out or damaged. Also, replace grips that are the wrong size for your hands with properly sized grips for a more comfortable riding experience. Depending on your preferences, budget and bicycle, grips come in a variety of styles and materials. Purchasing high quality grips that meet your needs and that are properly sized will make your cycling experience more enjoyable.
Step 1
Remove handlebar end plugs, if your bike has them, by prying them off with a screwdriver.
Step 2
Insert the screwdriver into the end of the grip closest to the hand brakes.
Step 3
Insert the spray lubricant tube underneath the grip beside the screwdriver. Squirt the lubricant once or twice to loosen the grip. Alternatively, you can spray soapy water or rubbing alcohol underneath the grip for lubrication if you do not want to use a spray lubricant on your bike, or if you don't have any.
Step 4
Remove the lubricant tube and the screwdriver from underneath the grip, and set them aside.
Step 5
Wiggle the handlebar grip around to distribute the lubricant equally underneath the grip, and then the grip then slide off of the handlebar.
Step 6
Clean the exposed handlebar well with soap and water, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
Step 7
Spray hairspray into the inside of the new grip, and quickly work to slide it onto the handlebar. Once the hairspray dries, it will act as glue to keep the grip in place.
