The University of Maryland Medical Center defines acne as a skin condition that causes clogged pores and leads to outbreaks, such as pimples, cysts and abscesses. Controlling the amount of oil and acne-causing bacteria on the surface of your skin can clear up the area. The quickest way to get rid of acne is to purchase products effective against breakouts and use them on a regular basis. If you have no success at home, speak to your doctor about other options. Prescription medications, such as antibiotics and topical retinoids, are available to get rid of severe acne.

Step 1

Cleanse your face twice a day with a mild facial cleanser. In the morning and before bed, wash your face to get rid of oil, dead skin cells and dirt that may block pores. Rinse off the mild cleanser with cool water.

Step 2

Use an over-the-counter acne treatment cream that contains benzoyl peroxide. Acne.org recommends using a brand with a 2.5 percent concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Massage the cream into acne-prone areas. Allow approximately 10 minutes for the cream to dry before applying any other skin-care products. Repeat application twice a day.

Step 3

Apply a moisturizer with built-in sunscreen. Topical acne medications can cause sensitivity to the sun and skin dryness. Use moisturizers that contain SPF 15 or higher, and apply the products before going outdoors.

Step 4

Control the amount of oil on your skin. Keep hair out of your face to avoid oil transference to your skin. Wipe down objects, such as cell phones, before you place them against your skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have any skin irritation when using the benzoyl peroxide, reduce usage to once a day.
  • Avoid skin-care products with ingredients that may worsen your acne. All makeup and skin-care products should have an oil-free or noncomedogenic label.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild facial cleanser
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Moisturizer with SPF 15
