Eyeglasses can be expensive and if you have insurance coverage, your vision plan may only allow for a new pair of eyeglasses every couple of years. To prolong the life of your eyeglasses, remove scratches that have appeared on the lenses. If you have anti-reflective type of lenses, it is not recommended by the Optical Blog that you remove the scratches since it can worsen the damage. If you are unable to repair the lenses on your own, visit your optician for advice.
Baking Soda
Step 1
Combine the baking soda and water in a clean bowl. Blend the mixture with a spoon until you form a thick paste. Add more baking soda or water if needed to reach desired consistency.
Step 2
Apply the baking soda paste directly to the eyeglass lenses using a clean and soft cotton cloth. Rub the paste gently into the eyeglasses using a circular motion. Continue this for approximately 10 to 20 seconds.
Step 3
Rinse off the paste with cold water. Check the appearance of the scratch. If you still see it, repeat the process until the scratch is removed. If the lenses have a scratch-resistant coating, it may take a lot of buffing to remove the scratch, according to Glasses Crafter.
Toothpaste
Step 1
Apply a dollop of non-abrasive toothpaste to a clean cloth.
Step 2
Move the cloth in a circular motion over the scratches for approximately 10 seconds.
Step 3
Check the appearance of the scratch. If it is still noticeable, continue to rub at the scratch with the cloth and a small amount of the toothpaste.
Step 4
Rinse the eyeglasses with cold water. Dry the lenses with a soft, clean cloth.
Brass Polish
Step 1
Place a small amount of brass polish on a clean cotton cloth. Use brass polish to remove scratches found only on plastic eyeglass lenses, according to Glass Crafter.
Step 2
Buff the scratch for several seconds and check the status. Continue to buff if the scratch is still present.
Step 3
Wipe off the polish with a cloth. Do not rinse the lenses.
