Dandruff Remedies

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp where it sheds dead cells at an increased rate. This shedding of dead cells is a normal bodily function, except in the case of dandruff, it causes a build-up of skin flakes in the hair which fall out onto clothing. There are two different types of dandruff: dry and waxy. Neither of these conditions is permanent, and are easily treatable.

Oil-Based Remedies

Dandruff can be caused by a dry scalp, and using oil can help keep your scalp moisturized. Massage warm oil into your head and cover it with a damp towel for a few minutes. For better results, massage hot oil onto the scalp right before you go to bed. Sleep with it in your hair, and the next morning, rub a mixture of lemon juice and cosmetic vinegar into the scalp using a cotton wool towel. Leave this in for 1 hour before washing the mixture out of your hair. Use a rinse of lemon juice and hot water to finish the process. Try this treatment one to two times a week for up to 3 months.

Kitchen-Based Remedies

It is surprising how many remedies for dandruff can be found in the kitchen. Tea also has huge beneficial properties for your scalp and hair. Boil 5 tsp. of tea leaves, and use it as a last rinse for your hair. This will help provide nourishment for the scalp. Also, try baking soda instead of shampoo for cleaning your hair. The baking soda will help to loosen the dead skin and clear the dandruff. Finally, mix equal parts apple juice and warm water, and rub a small amount (approximately 4 tbsp.) into your hair and leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes before you rinse it away. Do this two to three times a week to get rid of dandruff.

Other Remedies

Another simple step you can try to relieve your dandruff is a simple scalp massage. As your lather up your head, massage the shampoo into your scalp to loosen the dry flakes. Make sure you do not scratch your head while you are doing this, as that can lead to sores on your scalp.
Also, be sure to wash your hair with a dandruff shampoo twice. The best way to do this is to lather your hair immediately upon entering the shower. Leave the shampoo in your hair as you take the rest of your shower, rinsing as you are ready to end. Once your hair is completely rinsed, do another quick lather and rinse. The first rinse medicates your hair and helps get rid of the flakes while the second rinse adds a bit of medication which will last until the next washing.
Finally, make sure you get plenty of sunshine. The UV rays of the sun are actually beneficial for scaly skin conditions. Make sure you limit your exposure to 30 minutes or less due to the harmful effects the sun can have on the rest of your skin, and be sure to wear sunscreen
