Dry Scalp Remedy for Natural Hair

If you have a dry, itchy scalp, Health Services at Columbia explains that seborrheic dermatitis could be the cause. Even if your hair is natural, meaning that it has had no exposure to chemical processes, such as color treatments, bleaches, perms or relaxers, dry scalp is still possible. Stress, dietary habits, environmental factors and blow-drying can all cause dry scalp. Natural remedies to calm the itch and relieve your dry scalp include the use of products that may already be in your kitchen cabinets.

Step 1

Wash your hair as you normally would, using a moisturizing shampoo. Rinse the shampoo from your hair and towel dry. Pat your hair, do not rub. The friction from rubbing can damage your hair and irritate your scalp.

Step 2

Pour equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Apply the apple cider to your hair while it is dry. Simply spray the diluted apple cider vinegar onto your scalp, liberally.

Step 3

Massage the apple cider vinegar into your scalp using the pads of your fingertips. Continue massaging for 3 to 5 minutes, gently working the apple cider vinegar into the scalp.

Step 4

Rinse the diluted apple cider vinegar and water from your hair with a warm water rinse; not hot. Remove excess water by patting your hair with a towel. Allow your hair to air dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply the diluted apple cider rinse to your hair at least once a week. Store the unused portion of the apple cider vinegar rinse in the refrigerator for future use.
  • Try not to scratch your dry scalp using your fingernails. Scratching can actually exacerbate the itching, and cause damage to your scalp. If you feel the uncontrolled urge to scratch, use the pads of your fingertips instead.
