Mayonnaise can provide your hair with both protein and oil to give you soft, shiny hair. Mayonnaise treatments can be as simple or complex as you like; and, you can customize these homemade conditioning treatments to your hair. Use a mayonnaise treatment at least once a month or as often as once a week to improve the health and appearance of your locks.

Significance

Mayonnaise is made of oil, vinegar and egg yolks blended to form an emulsion. Oil provides your hair with essential conditioning moisture, while eggs are an effective protein treatment, according to P.A. Shenberger at "BBW Magazine." Protein and moisture are an ideal treatment for dry or damaged hair and can keep your hair healthy if you are growing it out or using chemical treatments, like color or perms.

Function

Apply mayonnaise or a mayonnaise mixture to dry or damp hair. Use a wide-tooth comb to work the mayonnaise through your hair, paying special attention to the shaft and ends of your hair. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a cover it with a shower cap. Leave the mayonnaise conditioner on your hair for at least 15 minutes or up to one hour. Rinse well with cool water, then shampoo and condition as normal using cool or cold water, recommends Skinverse.com.

Considerations

While you can use mayonnaise on its own, adding other nourishing ingredients to your homemade hair treatment can make it more effective. If you have damaged hair, add additional eggs to increase the protein in your conditioner. Make a richer conditioner by combining 1/2 cup to 1 cup of mayonnaise with half an avocado. Mix the two together until the mixture is an even green color. Honey, almond oil or olive oil are other options to add to the mayonnaise in your natural conditioner, according to CosmeticsDiary.com.

Potential

You may notice a buildup from mayonnaise hair treatments, particularly if you find it difficult to effectively remove the egg or oil residue. Rinsing your hair with diluted apple cider vinegar may lower the risk of buildup, reports Hairstyle.com. Cool water may be more effective than warm water. Like all hair products, it may take some experimentation to find the solution that works best for your hair.

Warning

Avoid washing mayonnaise conditioner out in the shower. Like other oily hair treatments, mayonnaise may leave oily residue in your shower, increasing your risk of a fall, according to CosmeticsDiary.com. Wash the mayonnaise from your hair over the bathtub or sink to eliminate this possibility.
