Harsh chemical-laden shampoos and dry winter weather are just some of the things that strip moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Dry hair is not only an aesthetic problem as frizz is usually the end result, but hair that lacks moisture is more prone to damage from breaking. If your once-soft mane is now leaning more toward the consistency of straw, it's time to take action. A few modifications to your daily routine and some extra care can help you restore moisture to dry hair.
Step 1
Wash your hair no more than every other day in warm water. Water, especially hot water, strips away the oils in your hair, leaving it dried out. Use a mild moisturizing shampoo for dry and damaged hair, and follow up with a conditioner.
Step 2
Dry your hair gently with a towel, but avoid vigorous rubbing as it may cause breakage. Allow your hair to air-dry. Avoid curling irons and flatirons as the extra heat will only make conditions worse.
Step 3
Deep condition your hair weekly to help restore moisture by heating olive oil until it is warm, but not hot, in the microwave or on the stove. Massage the oil into your hair and onto your scalp before wrapping your head in a hot towel. Leave the oil in your hair for 30 minutes before washing it out. Mayonnaise can be applied instead of the oil by mixing a half-cup of mayonnaise with enough lukewarm water to make it runny and applying it to your hair. Wash it out after 10 minutes.
Step 4
Take precautions to protect your hair from the elements. Wear a hat when you go outside to protect it from sunshine and cold, dry winter weather. Be sure to wear a cap when you go swimming as chlorine isn't good for your hair.
Step 5
Drink enough water to keep your body hydrated. Caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate you and should be avoided. Dehydration can a take a toll on hair, which would negate progress you have made, making it harder to restore the moisture to your hair.
Tips and Warnings
- Get your hair trimmed every six weeks to eliminate frayed ends, which can easily split.
- If you experience excessive hair loss or no measures seem to alleviate your dry hair, talk to your doctor to rule out any possible medical complications that may be the underlying problem.
