If you consistently have dark circles underneath your eyes, covering them up will not treat the underlying problem. Dark circles may be caused by a lack of sleep, allergies, nasal congestion or skin pigmentation due to sun exposure, says the Mayo Clinic. In some cases, dark circles under the eyes may be caused by a more serious condition. Consult your doctor if your dark circles are accompanied by any additional symptoms. Otherwise, you can cover up your dark circles at home if your doctor approves.
Step 1
Rinse a washcloth in cold water, then wring it out and place it over the eye area for five minutes, says ophthalmologist Monica L. Monica, M.D., Ph.D., in "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women." The cold compress causes the blood vessels underneath the eyes to constrict, making dark circles less noticeable.
Step 2
Choose a store-bought cream concealer in a pink tone for fair skin and a peach tone for darker skin, says makeup artist Bobbi Brown in an article in "Cosmopolitan." The pink and peach tones offset the purple veins showing underneath the eyes.
Step 3
Apply the cream concealer on the darkest areas under the eyes with a small makeup brush. If you don't have a makeup brush on hand, use a clean, small paintbrush.
Step 4
Pat the under-eye area with your pinkie finger to evenly distribute the makeup. Do not rub or smear the makeup. If necessary, apply more concealer over the darkest areas and pat the area to blend.
Step 5
Apply foundation and powder as usual to even out your skin and blend the cream concealer with your natural skin tone.
