Most people breathe without thinking about it, which can create up to a 20 percent deficit in the amount of oxygen they receive. According to the University of Missouri Extension Center, breathing capacity lowers with age and improper breathing habits. A lack of sufficient oxygen results in lower alertness levels and reduced energy. Deep breathing exercises, humming and Chinese breath exercises can help to revive lagging respiratory systems and increase energy and alertness, reduce stress and help you relax.
Step 1
Sit up straight in an armless chair to perform the Chinese breathing technique. You may do the short, shallow breathing designed to open the body and mind to the harmony of the universe while you're standing, but make sure that you are in good health first.
Step 2
Take in three short breaths before you exhale. On the first short breath, raise your arms straight out in front of you at shoulder height. While you take the second quick inhalation, spread your arms to the sides, keeping them at the same level. On the third breath, lift your arms straight up over your head.
Step 3
Move your arms down to your sides straight, with your fingers facing the floor, as you exhale through your open mouth. Repeat the entire process 10 to 12 times.
Step 4
Center your mind and body and align your life force energy, or Qi, with another simple Chinese breathing technique. According to the National Qigong Association, easy, sustained focused breathing is an integral part of overall well-being.
Step 5
Sit or stand erect with your chin slightly forward and your eyes facing straight ahead. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breath. Draw in your breath through your nose and fill your diaphragm. Bring your hands up in front of your body and press them together in a prayer position under your chin as you hold the breath for a few seconds.
Step 6
Release the breath through your mouth as you push your hands away from your body and toward the ground. Open your eyes and repeat the breathing technique 10 times.
Tips and Warnings
- The quick shallow breathing techniques are most useful when employed to increase energy levels, while the deep breathing to align the Qi is an effective relaxation technique.
- Older people should always do the Chinese breath exercises while sitting because the technique can cause you to hyperventilate and pass out for a second, which could cause you to lose balance and fall. If you begin to feel lightheaded while doing the breathing exercises, stop and resume normal deep breathing, taking one long breath through your nose and exhaling strongly through your mouth.
