Age spots normally appear on people who are over 40. However, they can form on those who are much younger. Melanin is the chemical that makes your skin darker, so when your skin produces more, you form dark age spots. Sunlight damages the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin, which are the chemicals that make your skin look healthy. You can lighten the age spots on your face by using effective products and removing dead skin.
Step 1
Soak a cotton ball in buttermilk. Buttermilk contains a natural bleach that can help lighten the age spots on your face. Rub the buttermilk on your face, work into the age spots and let the buttermilk seep into your skin.
Step 2
Douse or soak a cotton ball in lemon juice--either from a bottle or squeeze a lemon. Lemon juice contains a natural bleach that works to lighten your age spots. Allow the liquid to evaporate.
Step 3
Rub an over-the-counter skin cream on your face to lighten age spots. The Mayo Clinic says you should buy a product that contains a mild steroid agent. But it may take several months to see results. If this doesn't work for you, consult a dermatologist for a prescribed medication. The most common types of medication for age spots are hydroquinone and tretinoin.
Step 4
Exfoliate your skin. Buy a loofah that contains firm fibres. A loofah is a sponge-like product that will help remove the layer of dead skin on your face. Your dead skin contains the most amount of melanin, so removing it with a loofah can lighten age spots. Add a mild soap to the loofah and gently scrub your face. Repeat several times per week.
Step 5
Limit your exposure to the sun. Since direct contact with UV rays is the main cause of age spots on your face, you should make every effort to stay out of the sun--at least for long periods without protection. Also, wear clothing that shade your face from the sun. A hat is essential, as well as sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
