It isn't uncommon for women to develop a little cellulite on their thighs. Pockets of fat can begin to accumulate just under the surface of the skin and cause the affected area to take on a dimpled or rippled look. And though cellulite is completely harmless, most women want to get rid of it once it forms, which can be a difficult task.

Step 1

You can reduce cellulite on the thighs by losing excess weight, explains the Mayo Clinic. The safest and most effective way to do this is through a combination of diet and exercise.

Step 2

Exercising to lose weight and reduce the appearance of cellulite is best done with aerobic activities, advises the Nemours Foundation. Biking, running, dancing, swimming, rowing or playing sports like soccer, basketball and tennis can increase your expenditure of energy. The more energy you expend, the more calories you burn, which can encourage weight loss.

Step 3

Minimize cellulite on the thighs with deep-tissue massage. Also referred to as vigorous massage, this form of therapy is said to drain excess fluid, while improving the blood flow to the area, which may help to improve cellulite. It's also coupled with laser therapy, light therapy or radiofrequency therapy to enhance the production of collagen to tighten dimpled skin, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Dissolve fatty deposits with mesotherapy. This alternative form of cellulite treatment uses a mixture of hormones, enzymes, herbs, minerals and vitamins to melt away the deposit causing the dimpled or rippled appearance along the skin of your thighs.

The Food and Drug Administration cautions consumers against the use of mesotherapy to improve cellulite. The reasons for this largely revolve around misleading and even false claims associated to this treatment. Studies are limited, scientific evidence is lacking and you could experience adverse effects from injections, including infection and skin deformities.

Tips and Warnings

  • Dieting to improve the appearance of cellulite is exactly the same as dieting for any other purpose. Reducing your caloric intake while incorporating healthier foods into your diet can generate what's known as a caloric deficit. A caloric deficit of 3,500 calories is equal to a pound of fat loss.
  • Always consult your primary care physician before beginning any new diet or exercise regimen.
