Microdermabrasion treatments provide subtle improvements in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and skin dullness. The procedure induces few side effects and can treat skin on the face, hands, chest and neck. If professional sessions don't comfortably fit within your budget, home microdermabrasion kits can offer a lower cost option that can deliver similar results.
Procedure and Effects
Microdermabrasion uses an abrasive substance, such as aluminum oxide crystals, to vigorously exfoliate away the top layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, to reveal the younger skin cells underneath. The skin reacts to the treatment as though it were a mild injury and speeds up cell production to replace the lost cells. Consequently, new cells reach the surface of the skin at a faster pace which contributes to a more vibrant and even skin tone. The treatment also boosts the production of collagen, a protein that gives skin its structural support, which can slow the onset fine lines and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion also increases the efficacy of topicals and medications by allowing them to more easily penetrate the skin.
Home Varieties
There are a variety of home microdermabrasion kits on the market that differ in price and included items. The lower cost varieties include an abrasive cream that is applied with the finger tips, while other versions include a vibrating wand that is used in the exfoliation process. Most kits also include a protective, after-treatment moisturizer and instructions. Home kits can be purchased at drug stores, department stores and from online retailers and range in price from $25 to $250.
Benefits and Drawbacks
The American Academy of Dermatology asserts that between six and 13 microdermabrasion sessions are needed for optimal results. Professional sessions can cost from $100 to $150 each, while a home kit can provide several sessions per package. Also, home treatments take less than 15 minutes to perform, while a doctor or spa visit takes 30 to 45 minutes. The home procedure, however, provides a less aggressive treatment than you would receive in the dermatologist's office, so additional treatments may be required to garner similar results.
Instructions
If your kit includes an applicator wand, attach the abrasive puff to the wand and wet the puff. Turn the wand on and massage a small area of your skin in a circular pattern for one to two minutes, being sure to avoid the eye area. Move to another area and repeat this procedure until the entire face has been treated. Rinse your face in warm water. If your kit does not include a wand, place a quarter-sized amount of the abrasive cream onto your finger tips and apply to damp skin in the same manner. Follow your microdermabrasion treatment with an application of moisturizer.
Side Effects and Precautions
Microdermabrasion causes minimal side effects which include redness or swelling. These effects should subside within 24 hours. Treated areas will be extra sun-sensitive, so be sure to use ample sunscreen. Normal and oily skin types can use the treatment up to three times per week, while drier types should use it no more than twice per week. Keep your skin well moisturized and avoid using other skin care products with harsh ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salycilic acid, as these may cause irritation.
