Whether it's silver, salt-and-pepper, pure white or just plain gray, gray hair can be gorgeous--it just requires a little more work to keep it that way. Gray hair doesn't produce as much oil and melanin as non-gray hair, which makes it thinner, more fragile and more prone to dryness. It also has less protection against environmental pollutants, like smoke and pollution. Over time, those pollutants can give your gray hair a yellowish cast, making it look dull and dirty.
Step 1
Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair every time you wash your hair. Apply conditioner generously, but concentrate only a small amount of shampoo mostly on your scalp to prevent dryness. Hydrated hair is less likely to yellow because of environmental damage.
Step 2
Book a glossing treatment at your salon, or use an at-home glossing kit to boost your hair's shine by coating the cuticle. The extra cuticle protection will make it harder for yellowing pollutants to penetrate your hair shaft.
Step 3
Use a moisturizing mud mask on your hair once a week to extend the life of your glossing treatment and hydrate your hair.
Step 4
Wash your hair once or twice a week with a shampoo that leaves violet deposits on your hair. The purple tint will counteract any yellow tints in your hair.
Step 5
Combine the juice from one lemon with 2 cups of water, and use the resulting lemon juice to brighten your hair once a month. Work the mixture into your hair like shampoo and rinse with cool water after a few minutes.
