Monitoring your heart rate during exercise is one of the most important forms of feedback in regards to the intensity of your workout. Knowing your heart rate lets you adjust the intensity, increasing the likelihood of reaching your goals. Fortunately, many companies are producing heart rate monitors that do not require you to wear a chest strap, which can be uncomfortable.

Solo 960

The Sportline Solo 960 uses its patented One-Touch Technology, which allows the user to simply touch the edges of the watch to get a heart rate reading. The watch displays the beats per minute as well as a corresponding percentage of maximum heart rate derived from the wearer's age.

ePulse

Worn on the forearm, the ePulse from Impact Sports provides a continuous heart rate reading, helping the wearer to determine efficiency of exercise. It also measures the average heart rate over time, allowing the user to determine his fitness level and monitor improvements. This is possible because a lower resting heart rate typically indicates a higher fitness level.

NuMetrex

Perhaps the most intriguing heart rate monitor on the market, NuMetrex offers a line of workout shirts, tank tops and sports bras that have a built-in monitor. According to its website, the clothes are made of "smart fabric" that contains special sensing fibers.
