Even if you're not a character in a crime novel, your body can pick up poisons from a number of sources. Many household items, including cleaning agents, old paint, and even some poorly grown foods may all contain substances that are toxic to the human body. With regular exposure, the body may become less able to remove these toxins from its systems effectively. Several different herbs are thought to have detoxifying properties that can help your body detox from poisons. These herbs are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and you should always consult a physician before taking them.
Cilantro
Cilantro can be used to help the body detoxify itself after mercury poisoning, according to Heartspring Naturopathy. Cilantro can be used as a tincture, which is a concentrated liquid that is placed under the tongue or rubbed into the skin in places where blood vessels are closer to the surface. According to Heartspring, you can also eat cilantro in foods along with taking the tincture. However, cilantro in foods is less potent. Also, if you have had nausea or other discomfort after eating cilantro in the past, you should not eat it or use the tincture orally. Cilantro tincture is not a medication, and so its strengths and other ingredients may vary. Show the tincture to your physician before taking it.
Alfalfa
Alfalfa is "the richest land source of trace minerals," according to How to Detox Safely. These minerals are thought to help the body restore and improve neurological and other functions after suffering damage from poisoning. Alfalfa may be particularly helpful after excessive exposure to carbon dioxide, as it is believed to help break down carbon dioxide molecules and expel them from the body. If you are considering using alfalfa to detox from poisons, first ask your doctor.
Turmeric
Some naturopaths recommend turmeric for detoxing from poisons because it is thought to help boost the efficiency of the liver, your body's primary toxin-removing organ, according to Detox Your Body. Turmeric, which is usually sold as a yellow powder and is used in cooking, turmeric is said to boost the production of bile in the liver, which helps the body remove poisons more quickly. Although turmeric is generally safe for human consumption in the quantities used in cooking, you should talk to your doctor if you plan to take it to detox or for an extended period of time.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek may be used as an expectorant, according to Detox Safely. It is believed to help the body remove excess mucus, including mucus that has hardened or accumulated in the lungs or respiratory tract. Fenugreek may therefore be useful to combat the effects of inhaled poisons by helping the respiratory system dispose of any of the poisonous molecules that have lodged in the body's natural mucus layers. If you have symptoms of excess mucus that do not clear up in a few days, however, you should check with a physician.
