Learning how to swing a golf club the correct way is a major challenge for most new golfers. In order to swing the club with enough velocity to propel the ball down the fairway and also hit the ball accurately, a golfer needs balance and timing while manufacturing significant club-head speed when making impact with the ball. The ability to swing the club correctly will help a golfer build confidence in his game and enjoy his time on the course.
Step 1
Make sure your front shoulder is facing the target. Many golfers open up their front shoulder because they have the desire to see where the ball will end up or because they don't know how to line up correctly. However, if the left shoulder--for a right-handed golfer--is not facing the target squarely, the golf swing will not produce an accurate shot.
Step 2
Grip the club firmly. This is often a trial-and-error process because a balance must be achieved between having a grip that is relaxed enough to help the golfer get full rotation with his swing and one that is strong enough that the club head won't move on impact with the ball. Grip the club at a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10. That is about the equivalent of a firm handshake.
Step 3
Rotate your hips to the rear to get your weight and momentum on your backside as you prepare to swing the club. One of the keys to being able to drive the ball with distance is getting the club in the proper launch position. Start the process by rotating your hips and follow with your upper body and arms. When you get your hands to shoulder height, you have completed the backswing.
Step 4
Drive your hips to and through the ball and have your hands and arms follow when you swing the club at the ball. Once your hips have cleared the hitting zone, your club head will be moving with significant speed to drive the ball down the fairway. In order to get maximum distance and accuracy, snap your right wrist as you make contact with the ball.
Step 5
Finish your swing by following through after impact. Focus your vision on the rear and center portion of the ball. Try to keep your head down as you finish your swing. You should not stop your follow through until your club is at shoulder height.
