The Side Effects of Imodium AD

Imodium A-D was once a prescription medication, but it can now be purchased over-the-counter to treat diarrhea. The active ingredient in this medicine that slows the movement of the intestines to stop diarrhea is called loperamide HCl. As with any medication, Imodium A-D has the potential for some side effects, but most users will have minimal, if any ill effects.

Dizziness

Dizziness can result from the use of Imodium A-D, suggests Drugs.com. This isn't considered a serious side effect, but if it is persistent, the medicine should be discontinued and a health care professional should be contacted. Users experiencing dizziness should avoid using heavy machinery or operating a vehicle, warns Imodium.com.

Drowsiness

Some users may experience temporary drowsiness. Drugs.com states that this is a harmless effect of the medicine, but if it is severe or persistent, the user should discontinue Imodium A-D.

Abdominal Effects

It is possible to experience mild to moderate constipation when using Imodium A-D. This is the result of the way the drug affects the intestinal movements. By slowing the intestines, food and waste move more slowly through the body before being expelled during a bowel movement. Some stomach pain can accompany the constipation, states Drugs.com. Should a user experience a worsening of diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, watery diarrhea, mucus in the stool or black stool, a medical professional should be contacted immediately. These are abnormal and serious side effects of the drug.

Skin Discomfort

Mild itching of the skin can occur with the use of this drug. Drugs.com suggests that a mild skin rash can appear. Should the rash be raised and extremely itchy, a condition called hives, the patient may have an allergy to the drug. Imodium A-D should not be used when an allergy is suspected. More severe signs of allergic reaction include swelling of any part of the mouth or face, or trouble breathing.
