The scruffy look may be popular now, but it's not the right look for everyone. Unfortunately, sometimes no matter how hard you try, your face or legs are bristly or rough even right after you've shaved. Not shaving properly can leave your skin cut and bleeding or give you painful razor burn. There's more to a good shave than just dragging a razor across your skin; proper preparation and skin care before, during and after your shave can help ensure smooth, silky skin when you're done.

Step 1

Plan to shave at least 20 minutes after you wake up in the morning. Your skin is a little puffy when you first wake up; give it time to go down so more of your hair is exposed and you'll get a closer shave.

Step 2

Use warm water to wet your face, legs, or whatever you plan to shave.

Step 3

Gently cleanse the area you're going to shave with a mild exfoliating cleanser. A facial scrub or body wash with exfoliating beads will remove dirt and dead skin from the area you wish to shave, allowing the razor to come into closer contact with your skin. Rinse the area well with warm water after cleansing.

Step 4

Apply a layer of shaving cream or gel to your skin. Let it sit for at least four minutes to soften the hair and make it easier to shave.

Step 5

Pull your skin tight and draw the razor in smooth, straight strokes along your face or leg. Shaving in the opposite direction of the hair growth may allow for a closer shave, but shaving in the same direction the hair grows reduces the risk of cuts and ingrown hairs. This is a matter of personal choice.

Step 6

Rinse the razor periodically to keep it free of shaving cream and cut hairs.

Step 7

Continue to shave until all the hair has been removed. Long strokes work best when shaving your legs; shorter strokes work better around your jawline, ankles or bikini line.

Step 8

Rinse off any excess shaving cream or gel with warm water. Use a washcloth to remove all the shaving cream, if necessary. Pat, don't rub, the area with a clean towel until it's almost completely dry.

Step 9

Apply lotion while your skin is still slightly damp to seal in the moisture. Rub the lotion into your skin and allow it to dry completely before getting dressed, if the area will be covered with clothing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always start with a sharp razor. Using a dull blade will make the razor more likely to skip, causing cuts, and won't provide a close shave. If you have sensitive skin, look for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free shaving cream and lotion to reduce the risk of irritation. When shaving the bikini area, always shave in the direction of hair growth since this area is prone to ingrown hairs.
