What Is Vardenafil HCL?

Vardenafil HCl is the generic name for Levitra, and is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The medication inhibits chemicals in the body that interfere with erections, and helps improve blood flow to the penis. Vardenafil HCl is an orange pill that requires a doctor's prescription. Several doses are available: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg. The dose can be found on the pill, which also has the name "Bayer" on it.

Function

Men who experience poor blood flow to the penis can benefit from vardenafil HCL. Vardenafil HCl does not increase sexual desire, and sexual stimulation is needed for the medication to produce an erection. Seniors might be intolerant to the effects of the medication because of side effects.

Uses

Vardenafil HCL is taken 60 minutes before sexual activity. It can be taken with or without food. High-fat foods can interfere with the drug's absorption. Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice should be avoided when using vardenafil HCL. Your doctor will decide which dose is right for you, but 10 mg is the usual dose.

Precautions

Like other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, vardenafil HCl can have serious side effects. Certain drugs cannot be taken in conjunction with the medication. Men who use nitroglycerine to treat angina can experience serious episodes of low blood pressure if using vardenafil HCL. The medication is not taken more than once a day. Headache and flushing are the most common side effects associated with vardenafil HCL. Rarely, vardenafil can result in an erection that will not go away, known as priapism, and the condition will require medical treatment.
