According to Drugs.com, pantoprazole, brand name Protonix, and esomeprazole, brand name Nexium, belong to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors, which are used to suppress production of stomach acid. Pantoprazole and esomeprazole are both used to treat and prevent frequent heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcers, stomach ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Pantoprazole and esomeprazole may cause several side effects.

Endocrine Effects

According to Drugs.com, pantoprazole and esomeprazole may cause changes in the endocrine system leading to high blood sugar, increased thirst, weight gain, weight loss, diabetes mellitus and goiter.

Cardiovascular Effects

Drugs.com states that Protonix may affect the heart and cause abnormal echocardiogram, chest pain, abnormal heartbeats, heart failure, hypotension, hypertension, rapid pulse rate and swelling of the body. Esomeprazole may cause hypertension, angiodema, chest pain and tachycardia.

Respiratory Effects

According to Drugs.com, Protonix and esomeprazole may affect the respiratory system and lead to cough, chest pain, pharyngitis, asthma, nosebleeds, pneumonia, rhinitis and sinusitis.
