Breast self exams are most informative when they are done regularly. This is why it is important to begin doing them early in life. Having your teen do a breast self exam will allow her to get an idea of what her breasts should normally feel like, which will allow her to recognize future lumps or changes more easily. This is especially important for teens with a family history of breast cancer.
Step 1
Lie down and support yourself. This is best done by placing a pillow under your head.
Step 2
Put your right hand underneath the back of your head.
Step 3
Using the pads of the fingers on your left hand, begin to examine your right breast. Feel each section of your breast first using a small circular motion, and then using an up-and down motion. Use light, medium and then heavy pressure.
Step 4
Squeeze your right nipple to see if a discharge appears.
Step 5
Switch arm positions and do Steps 1 through 4 on your left breast.
