According to TeensHealth, your hair consists of three layers. When the outside cuticle lifts, it exposes the inner layers of the hair shaft and it no longer has the ability to retain moisture giving it a dry, frizzy appearance. Damage to the cuticle can be caused by excessive exposure to humidity, sun, chlorine and the environment. Chemically treating your hair and the use of hot styling tools can aggravate already damaged hair. Supplying your hair with extra moisture through homemade hair masks can help close the cuticle, trapping much-needed moisture inside the hair shaft and eliminating frizziness.
