Harsh environmental conditions, overuse of heated styling products, chemical processing and genetics are all possible causes of dry, brittle hair. You long for healthy, supple hair but your hair doesn't seem to cooperate, and you have to deal with frizziness, split ends or breakage. There are ways to get rid of dry, brittle hair and promote the growth of new, healthy hair.
Step 1
Wash your hair every other day or every third day with a shampoo formulated for dry or damaged hair. According to physicians Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz in their book "You: Being Beautiful: The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty," washing your hair daily can strip dry hair of moisture and essential oils.
Step 2
Moisturize your hair with a deep conditioner. Dry, brittle hair thirsts for moisture and hydration. Use a deep conditioner formulated for dry or damaged hair twice a week. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or use a shower cap to allow your hair to soak up the moisture and nutrients. Leave the conditioner on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly to remove any residue.
Step 3
Apply an olive-oil treatment to your hair once a week. Olive oil is an excellent, natural moisturizer containing essential hair nutrients such as vitamin E and niacin. According to Gloria Handel in her book "Cutting Your Family's Hair," you should apply 1 oz. of olive oil to shampooed, towel-dried hair. Cover your hair with a towel and sit in the sun. The heat will help the nutrients absorb into your hair shaft.
Step 4
Coat your hair with a protective spray if you must use heated appliances. According to author Handel, heated appliances dry your hair out when used too frequently. A protective spray formulated for use with heated appliances can prevent damage to your hair shaft.
Step 5
Use alcohol-free styling products to avoid damage and brittleness. Alcohol is a drying agent and causes your hair to lose moisture.
