Morning sickness occurs because of the sudden increase of hormones in the body, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Morning sickness symptoms usually present during the sixth week of pregnancy and most of the time it subsides at the 12th week. Most women experience nausea, while some experience vomiting. If nausea occurs in the morning, sometimes it helps to eat some crackers and have sips of water prior to rising. Some persons benefit from smelling a lemon or ginger. It is important to stay hydrated by taking small sips of fluid throughout the day. Eating salty potato chips can also help to settle the stomach.

What to Avoid

Avoid eating meals that are too large. If there are certain odors or activities that make the symptoms worse, they should be avoided. Spicy foods should be avoided. It is important that the mother and child stay nourished, so as much as possible, meals should not be skipped. Avoiding warm places and staying cool sometimes can also help.

When to Call the Doctor

Dehydration, weight loss and severe nausea and vomiting can lead to a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. It is important to contact a doctor or seek emergency attention if weight loss, severe nausea and vomiting, or decreased urination occurs. If there is pain or fever or blood while vomiting, these are signs that the pregnant mother should be evaluated as soon as possible.

In severe cases, some women who experience morning sickness may require hospitalization to get stabilized if they become too dehydrated. Medications can also be ordered to help with nausea and vomiting. If symptoms are severe, it is important to discuss this with your doctor.
