A cervical collar, also known as a neck brace, is worn to prevent movement of neck after surgery or neck injury. Whether your relative or friend suffers from a spinal fracture, whiplash on neck pain, a cervical collar immobilizes the neck to speed the healing process. Several options exist to properly care for a person with a cervical collar.

Step 1

Examine the patient before letting him bathe or take a shower. Check to make sure the patient is wearing two collars while bathing or taking a shower. Most doctors prescribe a permanent collar and a temporary one for bathing. Typically, the temporary collars fits over the permanent one to shield the treated area. Advise the person to avoid hot tubs, whirlpools and general bathtubs. Long periods of time in water may wrinkle the neck skin or soak the collar.

Step 2

Advise the person to lie on his back before switching collars. To begin, slowly remove the old collar's front half and quickly replace it with the new collar's front half. Tell the person to flip onto his stomach and repeat the process with the lower halves. Adjust the cervical collar to a comfortable setting.

Step 3

Confirm that the person has the necessary items to help keep him comfortable during his treatment and make sure the person is sleeping on a firm mattress with limited movement. According to PubMed Central, this aids the cervical collar in straightening the spine and provides back support. Consider buying the person a soft collar, which is flexible, comfortable and has fewer effects. Usually, a doctor will determine if a hard collar will be worn all the time. Use pillows to prop the patient's head in bed and during regular hours.

Step 4

Inform your friend that powders, oils and lotions can cause discomfort or stickiness if they come into contact with the collar. If the person is a male, buy him an electric razor. Regular razors can leave residue such as shaving cream in his collar. An electric razor helps to keep his neck clean.
