There's nothing quite like fresh ginger, which imparts a warm, distinctive flavor to a number of dishes. Unfortunately, the odd-looking ginger root will dry out and lose its favor if it isn't used fairly soon. The problem is easily solved by storing the fresh ginger in sherry or vodka. The preserved ginger will remain firm, fresh and crisp with no loss of flavor for at least four to six weeks.
Step 1
Peel the fresh ginger with the tip of a teaspoon or a vegetable peeler. Leave the ginger whole or cut it into small chunks.
Step 2
Place the peeled ginger in a glass jar or a plastic container. Cover the ginger with sherry and place a lid securely on the container. If you prefer, cover the ginger with vodka.
Step 3
Remove the ginger from the container and use as needed. When the ginger is gone, use the sherry or vodka to flavor your favorite recipes.
Tips and Warnings
- If you're planning on using the ginger within two weeks, place the ginger in a zip-close bag and store it in the refrigerator. If the ginger is peeled, wrap it with a paper towel, then place it in the zip-close bag.
