Children will become better acclimated to being in the water and have more fun if they are comfortable, confident and at ease. The proper equipment and clothing will help them achieve that comfort level. There are many types of swim gear for children, such as bathing suits, goggles, flippers, water shoes, flotation devices and toys.

Bathing Suits for Kids

When selecting a bathing suit for children keep in mind the age of the child and the activities the child will be taking part in while wearing the suit. For boys, a bathing suit that ties at the waist works well, and for girls, especially younger girls, a one-piece bathing suit will fit better and be more comfortable. The bathing suit should allow for lots of movement without sagging or slipping off.

Water Safety Gear

To keep your child safe in the water there are several types of water safety gear that can be used. The Aqua Force suit serves the dual purpose of swimwear and life jacket by incorporating a patented system of integrated floats that are balanced between the front and back of the suits. It has been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard as a personal flotation device. A properly fit Coast Guard approved life jacket can be worn by children of all ages.

Goggles, Flippers and Water Shoes

Goggles, flippers and water shoes give children confidence in the water. Choose goggles with the appropriate type of lenses for your child, such as clear, which can be used anytime; tinted, which are useful outdoors and provide UV protection; or anti-fog, which are helpful for indoor swimming. Make sure the goggles create a suction cup effect on your child's eyes to prevent leaking and that the goggles have an adjustable strap.

Flippers give children confidence and speed in the water, and water shoes protect their feet from sandy or rocky ground.

Babies and Toddlers

If your child is not yet potty trained, use swim diapers, which are available in disposable, and a cover. This gear is required at almost all public pools and beaches. Children will not be allowed to enter the water unless they are wearing the proper gear.

Swimming Toys

There are a variety of swimming toys that promote water safety. Toys that sink to the bottom, such as weighted rings, are fun to dive for and retrieve. If your child likes to swim on the surface, motorized toys shaped like animals float and move themselves around the pool.
