Fructose is a naturally occurring sugar found in fruit, vegetables and honey. Man-made fructose is also used as a sweetener in many food products. According to Medline Plus, hereditary fructose intolerance, where the enzyme for breaking down fructose is not produced, occurs in 25 percent of offspring with two parents who carry a specific defective gene. Symptoms are generally misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome because the characteristics are quite similar.
Bloating & Distension
Bloating and distension of the stomach occur as a reaction to the gas produced by fermentation of fructose in the gastrointestinal tract. The terms "bloating" and "distension" are often used interchangeably, although the two are not one in the same. Medscape General Medicine makes the distinction by defining the term "bloating" as an overall abdominal enlargement, whereas "distension" is defined as a complete change in physical status and girth in the entire trunk area. In fructose allergy, this set of symptoms can become debilitating and painful.
Stomach Cramping
Stomach cramping can accompany discomfort, pain and enlargement of the abdomen. In fructose allergy, stomach cramping can become severe and debilitating. According to Medline Plus, stomach cramping often precedes diarrhea or gas related to bloating and distension of the trunk. This symptom may be relieved via flatulence, and usually does not indicate the condition is worsening. However, should pain persist following bowel movements or flatulence, it is imperative to contact a licensed physician immediately. It could be a sign of a more serious or life-threatening condition.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a relatively common occurrence in response to fructose allergy. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse describes diarrhea as frequent, loose, watery stools. When this symptoms lasts for more than 24 consecutive hours, the body becomes dehydrated. Dehydration is a serious condition that indicates that an individual is deprived of electrolytes and fluids necessary to keep vital organs functioning properly. Diarrhea and the possibility of dehydration pose a considerable health threat, especially among young children and the elderly.
