In Herbal Remedies, Asa Hershoff and Andrea Rotelli state that postnasal drip is extremely common in the United States as of 2001. It usually results from sinusitis caused by inflamed or infected sinus cavities from food allergies, viruses and bacteria. Accordingly, the most effective herbal remedies are antimicrobial as well as decongestant and astringent herbs. Alternately, Emanuel Josephson states that postnasal drip has no medicinal cures. Before adding any herbal remedies to a therapy regimen consult a health care provider to ensure that there will be no adverse herb-drug interactions.

Deep Breathing

In Breathe Deeply and Avoid Colds, Emanuel Josephson states that the only treatment effective for the elimination of postnasal drip begins with deep breathing to clear the nasal passages from obstruction and congestion. Josephson likens these exercises to pranayama breathing exercises practiced in yoga. Josephson warns that these exercises may be difficult until you have the proper muscle development. To treat postnasal drip comprehensively, Josephson suggests finding remedies for secondary issues, such as an astringent for the sore throat typically associated with postnasal drip.

Kali Bichromicum

Asa Hershoff states that Kali bich is potassium bicarbonate in the book Homeopathic Remedies. Hershoff indicates that Kali bich is particularly effective for postnasal drip associated with thick and stringy mucous, sinusitis, congestion and hoarseness. Hershoff recommends a general dosage with potency between 6C and 30C several times per day. To increase effectiveness, Hershoff suggests keeping yourself warm.

Hydrastis

According to Hershoff in Homeopathic Remedies, a common name for hydrastis is golden seal. Hershoff states that hydrastis is an effective homeopathic treatment for postnasal drip, but indicates that it is especially effective for cases including a watery and acrid discharge, persistent runny nose and severe frontal headache. Hershoff and Rotelli's findings also support the use of golden seal for postnasal drip and associated ailments. In Herbal Remedies, Hershoff and Rotelli indicate that golden seal can heal a nose with a damaged lining, the throat and the bronchi. Moreover, Hershoff and Rotelli cite antibacterial qualities of golden seal.
