A clear diet may be necessary due to illness or before a medical procedure or surgery. Foods included in a clear diet ensure you remain well hydrated and receive important electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. You should only stay on a clear diet for a few days, however, as it does not provide adequate nutrition, according to MayoClinic.com. Mayo Clinic also warns against using a clear diet for weight loss purposes. A major requirement for foods included in a clear diet is that you can see through them in their liquid state.

Beverages

Most of the foods included in a clear diet are liquid. Acceptable beverages include water, clear juice such as apple, grape or cranberry, strained juices such as lemonade or fruit punch, tea or coffee, Koolaid, clear soda or sports drinks. According to QuickCare.org, you should choose non-caffeinated soda and allow it to become somewhat "flat" before drinking.

Soups

Broth, bouillon and consomme are the soup choices for a clear diet. If you choose broth, make sure to skim all fat before consuming it.

Desserts

For dessert you can choose either clear popsicles or flavored gelatin. Popsicles can be store bought or you can make your own from clear juice or Koolaid.

Seasonings

According to Medline Plus, a division of the National Institutes of Health, you can add sugar and lemon to your tea. In addition, honey is an acceptable seasoning in a clear diet, according to MayoClinic.com.
