Staying physically active by maintaining fitness can have several health benefits, including increased strength, stamina and flexibility. When most people think of fitness they think of exercise equipment in a commercial health club. You can improve your fitness level, however, by running, doing strength training or exercising at home. To replicate the equipment in a health club, you could easily spend more than $10,000. Building your own exercise equipment gives you a customized home fitness center for a fraction of the cost.
Plyometrics Box
Step 1
Using the jigsaw, cut two pieces of plywood into trapezoids measuring 17-1/2 in. along the top edge, 23-1/2 in. along the bottom edge and 18-1/2 in. from top to bottom. Cut two additional pieces of plywood measuring 22 in. along the bottom edge, 16 in. along the top edge and 18-1/2 in. from top to bottom. These four pieces will serve as the sides of the plyometrics box. Sand all edges and surfaces of the plywood.
Step 2
Cut a 17-1/2 in. square for the top of the box. Measure diagonally to make sure you are square. Use the sandpaper to remove any burrs or rough edges on the sides and surface. The square top allows the box to measure 23-1/2 in. at the bottom and 17-1/2 in. at the top.
Step 3
Apply wood glue to the edges of each piece of plywood and align the smaller plywood sides inside the other two plywood sides. Use the drill to fasten the sides together with the drywall screws. The trapezoid design allows a slight angle to the sides of the box. Secure the square top to the sides by screwing down into the sides. Run the sandpaper over all joints and corners to smooth the edges.
Step 4
Draw outlines of handles on two opposite sides of the box and use a jigsaw to cut the hole. Cut the holes big enough so your hands can easily fit inside. Sandpaper the edges to remove any splinters.
Step 5
Use the box for a variety of exercises. Possible lower-body exercises include step-ups, box jumps, single-leg box jumps and elevated stationary lunges. Upper-body exercises include incline push-ups and dips.
Tips and Warnings
