How to Make Shampoo From Coconut & Sunflower Oil

According to "Hair and Hair Care," coconut oil contains fats and proteins that can hydrate and nourish dry and damaged hair. Sunflower oil moisturizes both the hair and scalp. You may choose to make your own shampoo at home if you want a shampoo with the benefits of both sunflower and coconut oils. The process of making sunflower and coconut oil shampoo at home is relatively easy and takes less than a half hour.

Step 1

Boil 1 cup distilled water. Remove the water from heat as soon as it comes to a rolling boil.

Step 2

Combine 1/4 cup castile liquid soap, 1 tbsp. coconut oil and 1 tbsp. sunflower oil in the pot with the hot water. According to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," castile liquid soap will remove excess dirt, oil and debris from the hair. Stir with a wooden spoon to thoroughly mix the ingredients, then allow the mixture to cool.

Step 3

Pour the mixture carefully into a container. Secure the lid to the container and refrigerate the shampoo until you are ready to use it. After use, promptly return the shampoo to the refrigerator. According to "The Science of Hair Care," the shampoo must remain refrigerated to maintain its freshness. The shampoo should only be used for one week, after which it is no longer effective and should be discarded.
